FOWEY, South Cornwall

A four storey town house, in the heart of this seaside town

Tucked away in the centre of Fowey on the South coast of Cornwall, is this four story town house, which starts in a tiny backstreet and opens up and up and up, until you reach the top floor with views over the river and also down into the heart of the town below. A wonderful holiday home for this family and friends to enjoy, we needed to create continuity over the four floors which we achieved by laying the same oak floor throughout, sticking to the same simple paint palette in every room and furnishing each window with classic plantation shutters. The kitchen on the first floor was a challenging space, expertly executed by Treyone Kitchens and still allowing space for a great long dining table and banquette seating for large dinner parties. The introduction of the strong bold paint colour on the kitchen units really helps to add drama and warmth to this busy room.

  • From the ground to the third floor are 5 bedrooms, each one a different shape and size. We didn’t want any one room to feel more special than another, so there would be no arguments about who had the ‘best room’ (a very useful trick in a holiday home!), so with our neutral base already in place, we simply added colourful, over-scaled headboards to each room, balanced out with painted bedside tables, large ceramic bedside lamps and bespoke patterned lampshades. Each bed was furnished with a soft white quilt, a cosy blanket for chilly days and patterned bed cushions. A small chest of drawers, a mirror and a small stool or chair were all squeezed in, even in the smallest of rooms.

As you make it to the top floor, this triple aspect room, up in the roof, is flooded with light including large bi-fold doors which can be opened back in summer enabling the balcony, view and sunshine to be enjoyed. We created a central seating area to enjoy the view and for family gatherings, but also a separate space with armchairs and a window seat for a more cosy spot. The green armchairs, originally in the clients parents’ house in the 1950’s were restored, recovered and updated and look very much at home in their new environment.
