Open-plan living on the River Dart

I first worked with my clients on this reversed level contemporary house 15 years ago, so was delighted when they invited me back to give it a new, refreshed and exciting look for this seventeen metre long dining, sitting and kitchen, open plan room.

Going back to the basics we started with replacing the tired old wooden floor with new, wide, oak engineered boards which we hand finished on site to achieve the perfect colour. Working alongside Martin Moore kitchens, a completely new layout out was planned and discussed in great detail which incorporated a new L-shaped large island which allows the ‘chef’ to enjoy the views of the river whilst preparing lunch.

  • New bright green voile curtains were made and hung on each window and all the existing furniture was kept, but recovered and restored to give it all another lease of life.

Finally, to improve the lighting, a whole array of ceiling spotlights on different circuits were installed in the kitchen area and purple ‘sparkle’ pendant lights in different shapes and sizes were scattered above the dining table for some fun mood lighting at this end of the room.

If the room was not already long enough, the antique mirror behind the cooker, reflects the whole room backwards adding whole other dimension to this glorious space.

For 2022, with the client’s daughter growing into a young teenager and with the need for another relaxing space for herself and friends, we refreshed and upgraded a small room in the lower ground floor of the house, with lovely views and direct exit to the garden.

A cool and bespoke corner unit was the main focus of the room, sitting on a smart wooden floor, but softened with a funky bold rug. We recovered the clients existing ottoman in a jazzy upholstery fabric and added a locally made oak ‘up and over’ table to make it practical for drinks and TV suppers. The colourful embroidered curtains and array of cushions add the finishing touches of pattern and texture to this room.
